In honor of Black History Month, in our Queer Theology Discussion Group meeting, we discussed the short story “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin alongside the lectionary for the week, through the complementary lenses of Black Liberation Theology and Queer Theology.
Have you witnessed an injustice and stood silently or even walked away? It’s likely we can all access some event in our memory. Recent injustices described in news stories and even captured on video for us all to watch in horror have caused me to reflect on what my role is in this current state of unrest in our country. I’ve wondered, at times, if I even have a role to play.
Our January Rector’s Book Club gathering at Christ & St. Luke’s centered on Rowan Williams’ slim but spiritually dense volume, “Being Disciples.” As the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Williams is known for high-level theological thinking, yet our group found this book remarkably accessible and “joyful,” with one member noting they read it in a single sitting.
This month we reflected on a variety of readings as planned, but also added in framing and discussion around the killing of Old Dominion Graduate Renee Good, this week, and the Christian faith of love and kindness that guided her as a queer Christian.
At Christ & St. Luke’s, we are a community that seeks to connect tradition with progress and faith with action. One of the most tangible ways we are living out our mission is through our commitment to environmental stewardship and our partnership with Tidewater Compost.
Our December Rector’s Book Club provided a rich opportunity to explore Hannah Anderson’s Advent devotional, Heaven and Nature Sing.
Reflecting on our current blessings and our hopes for the future, it became clear that the operational life of our church has expanded to a point where it calls for leadership similar to that of a traditional Chief Operating Officer.
We cannot claim to be a place of true welcome if we are not first and foremost a place of safety.
Our recent Rector’s Book Club gathering wrestled with Christian Wiman’s provocative collection of prose and poetry, “Zero at the Bone: Fifty Entries Against Despair.”
