Research has shown that seaweed helps reduce nutrient pollution in oceans and rivers which is brought about by excess phosphorous and nitrogen in the water caused by run-off from yards and farms.  Seaweed is being cultivated to produce more oxygen and absorb part of the excess nutrients and thereby reduce low oxygen dead zones that harm sea life.  Seaweed also has potential as animal feed, biofuel, fertilizer and in the restaurant industry.       Source  –  Green American
